USS ARIZONA MALL MEMORIAL

USS ARIZONA MALL MEMORIAL CASE STUDY

Project Overview

The USS Arizona Mall Memorial is a commemorative installation located on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson. Positioned just outside the Student Union, the memorial honors the 1,177 sailors and Marines who lost their lives aboard the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Construction began in October 2016 and was scheduled to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the attack. The project was funded by private donors and designed to create a space of remembrance and engagement for students and visitors.

Engraving Challenge

The University of Arizona required a local engraving provider with experience in deep-metal work for bronze materials. Each of the 1,177 bronze medallions needed individual engraving and precise rotational alignment for accurate placement during installation. The medallions would represent each fallen service member, and the project had to be completed within a strict timeline in order to meet the historical significance of the dedication date.

Our Approach

LEO Engraving was brought onto the project by a third-party program manager. We partnered with a materials processor to pre-texture the bronze before engraving began. Our team then developed and fabricated custom alignment fixtures to ensure correct rotational orientation for each medallion.

As the deadline approached, the project required a nonstop production schedule. We transitioned into 24-hour shifts to maintain both accuracy and quality while staying on track for the memorial unveiling.

The Results

All 1,177 bronze medallions were completed on time and engraved with care and precision. Each one commemorated a service member who perished aboard the USS Arizona. In addition to the service medallions, our team also engraved donor recognition pieces to honor those who supported the creation of the memorial.

Today, the memorial stands as a permanent fixture on the University of Arizona campus. It serves as a powerful tribute that invites reflection and remembrance for students, faculty, veterans, and visitors.

Why It Matters

This case study demonstrates LEO Engraving’s ability to manage high-volume, time-sensitive work for projects that carry deep emotional and historical meaning. From fabrication to final placement, we executed each stage with attention to detail and respect for the legacy being honored.
